The Legacy of Pitseolak
Sculptures, Drawings and Prints by the Descendants of Pitseolak Ashoona

Loondance Gallery
Welcome to The Legacy of Pitseolak ~ Le patrimoine de Pitseolak. This virtual retail exhibition honors and attempts to shed light on the artistic achievements of Pitseolak Ashoona, the great first-generation prints artist of the modern era of Inuit Art, and three generations of her gifted descendants.

In all, we present the works of nineteen reputed Cape Dorset artists. The artists featured include Pitseolak herself, three second-generation greats, her son Kiawak Ashoona, daughter Napatchie Pootoogook and daughter-in-law Mayoreak Ashoona, as well as Ohito Ashoona, Pitseolak's renowned sculptor grandson.

We have collected an outstanding selection of artworks for this occasion: twenty original limited-edition prints from the last four decades, twenty-seven one-of-a-kind drawings from this period and nineteen contemporary master carvings.

Our photographs of the sculptures offered in this retail exhibition are top-notch and we have devoted an entire page to every carving. Images of the smaller pieces appear almost life-sized. The art of drawing is the life-blood of the prints program, as the images that are transformed into prints are selected from drawings that the artists regularly produce. We will gladly furnish a large image of any print or drawing that you are considering for acquisition. The Prints section of our virtual exhibition is accompanied by annotations which provide succinct background information on the majority of the artists in our show.
